Treatments for severe malignant osteopetrosis (SMO) can help to:
- Manage issues like infections and bone fractures
- Slow down the worsening of the disease
Your doctor may prescribe corticosteroid medicines or high doses of calcitriol (a special form of vitamin D). These may help to slow the progression of SMO. Blood transfusions and a drug called epoetin alfa can manage problems caused by bone marrow failure. Special treatments for vision, hearing, and dental problems may also be needed.
ACTIMMUNE may provide benefits for patients with SMO
ACTIMMUNE® (Interferon gamma-1b) is the only medicine approved by the FDA to delay disease progression in children with SMO. Disease progression means lowered hemoglobin or platelet counts, a serious bacterial infection requiring antibiotics, a decrease in ability to hear, or a worsening of vision.
Ask your doctor for more information about how ACTIMMUNE may be able to help.
The only known possible cure for osteopetrosis is a bone marrow transplant. Ask your doctor for more information about bone marrow transplants.
